Rivian claims a range of 330 miles (EPA), and our test suggests it’s achievable. The launch model also includes semi-active suspension, a stylish green exterior, a premium interior with birchwood accents, and a top-tier audio system.

R2 Performance Takes the Lead

Rivian CEO, RJ Scaringe, stated that the R1 helped establish the brand globally. However, the company wanted to create a more affordable option without compromising on performance. The R2 Performance will be the first to launch, followed by the Premium spec in 2026 and a long-range Standard model expected in about a year. The Standard version will start at $48,490 (£36k) and offer 350bhp, 355lb-ft of torque, and 345 miles of range.

An entry-level Standard model will be priced at $45k (£33.6k) in 2027, with 275+ miles of range.

R2: Rivian’s Key to Mass Market Expansion

This is a crucial step for Rivian as it seeks to scale and target the mass-market. While the R1 has done well, especially in wealthier parts of the U.S., the R2 is the vehicle Rivian needs to keep its investors happy.

To achieve this, Rivian has streamlined its design and manufacturing processes while maintaining a focus on driving dynamics and cutting-edge technology. The R2 integrates AI and autonomous features, powered by Rivian’s expertise in vertical integration, especially in software.

European Launch Set for 2027

Rivian plans to introduce the R2 to Europe in late 2027, though the timeline depends on building the necessary infrastructure. The company prefers not to use an existing dealer network, aiming for a more innovative approach to market entry.

“Signing up a bunch of dealers is a very 20th-century idea. But at the same time, I want to get to the UK, Germany, and France quickly,” Scaringe adds.

Rivian Stays Optimistic Despite Challenges

Despite some hesitations around EVs, ongoing tariff issues, and global instability, Rivian remains confident. “We want to build millions of cars each year. There’s demand for EVs, and the proof is in creating a compelling product,” says Scaringe.

“The Tesla Model Y sells around 350,000 units per year in the U.S., and it’s six years old. There’s clear demand. However, in our view, there’s a lack of truly compelling choices. The R2 is not trying to copy anything else. We wanted the car to feel magical.”

While other competitors like the BMW iX3, Mercedes GLC, and Volvo EX60 promise larger ranges, none offer the same off-road capability or adventure spirit as the R2.
